Top Google searches of the year: Bain, Tua, Boyle, Jackson

The most searched-for terms New Zealanders typed into google.co.nz during 2009 give an insight into our culture.        

David Bain was the most searched for New Zealander, narrowly beating David Tua. Rugby league star Sonny Fai, swept out to sea in January, was the third most searched Kiwi, and Rachel Whitwell, the Auckland teacher who posed nude for Penthouse, was in fourth place.

Holiday traffic is obviously top of mind, not just at Christmas but all year round, as "toll road" - presumably referring to the new SH1 toll road north of Auckland - tops the fastest-rising web search list.

The top news searches were swine flu, Susan Boyle's rise to fame and the retrial of David Bain.

Interest from sci-fi fans resulted in the films Star Trek, 2012, Avatar, District 9 and Halo taking five of the top 10 spots for the most searched movies.

But the Twilight phenomenon dominates with New Moon and Twilight the first and second most searched movies.

Twilight-related terms also appear in four other categories - Fastest Rising, What Is, Who Is and Popular Celebrities.

When it comes to head-to-head comparisons, Outrageous Fortune loses out to Shortland Street in the battle of local TV. Michael Laws beats Rodney Hide in the most searched controversial politician stakes.

Despite a peak in popularity after their World Cup qualifying match in November, the All Whites were beaten by the All Blacks.

Social networking site Facebook was the most searched for term overall. It was a new entrant into the annual Most Popular Top 10.

2009년이 한달 남았습니다.

뉴질랜드에서는 11월 들어서면서 부터 '크리스마스 분위기'가 나기 시작했습니다. 지난 주말에는 오클랜드 시티에서 '산타퍼레이드'가 열리기도 했습니다. 어제는 길거리에서 '트리나무'를 파는 모습도 볼 수 있었습니다.

 

한낮 태양이 뜨겁게 내리쬐는 가운데 12월을 맞이하니 기분이 묘할 때가 있습니다. 연말이라고는 하나 연말 분위기가 전혀 나지 않는걸 보면 36년간 몸에 밴 시간감각이 여전한가 봅니다.

 

가끔씩 이나라 소식을 보기 위해 들어가는 '뉴질랜드헤럴드' 웹사이트에 '올해의 구글검색어'에 관련된 기사가 떳습니다.

이나라 사람들은 어떤것에 가장 관심을 갖았는지 궁금해서 읽어봤습니다.

 

 

올 한해 인터넷을 가장 뜨겁게 달군 인물은 바로 데이비드 베인(David Bain)이였네요. 아주 낯설게 다가오는 인물입니다. 이 인물은 1994년 6월경 일가족의 살인사건이 뉴스를 통해 알려녔고, 가해자로 판결났었는데 결국 무죄판결을 받아 석방되었다고 합니다. 그에 관련된 재판은 뉴질랜드 역사상 가장 큰 관심을 모은 재판이였다고 하네요.

검색어 1위에 오른 데이비드 베인 뒤를 바짝 추격한 인물 검색어 2위는 뉴질랜드 복싱선수 데이비드 투아(David Tua), 그리고 3위는 뉴질랜드 럭비 리그 스타 소니 파이(Sonny Fai)입니다.

 

한편, 뉴질랜드의 총리 존 키는 2009년 뉴질랜드 인물 검색어 7위에 머물렀습니다.

 

페이스북, 신종플루, 영화 트와일라잇, 유료 도로 역시 올 한해 뉴질랜드 국민들이 가장 즐겨 찾는 검색어로 꼽혔습니다.

크리스마스와 새해 연휴가 다가오면서 오클랜드 SH1 유료 도로에 대한 국민들의 관심이 가장 빠른 속도로 급부상했으며, 올 한해 전 세계를 공포에 몰아넣었던 신종플루 정보 기사를 찾아보는 네티즌들도 크게 증가했습니다.

 

영화부문에서는 할리우드를 뜨겁게 달군 뉴문(New Moon)이 1위를 달렸으며, 트와일라잇(Twilight)은 2위를 차지했네요. 인류 멸망을 소재로 다룬 영화 2012는 3위를 기록했습니다.

 

 

짧은 시간이였지만,

구글 웹 검색어를 통해 올 한해 뉴질랜드 사회의 한 면모를 볼 수 있었습니다.

내년에는 어떠한 검색어들이 1위를 차지할지 큰 관심거리이다.
