Better life a trade-off for Asian migrants

Asian immigrants who come to New Zealand in search of a better life say the experience is not always what they expect.

For many of the 160,000 Asians immigrating to New Zealand every year, there are trade-offs - better life in a clean, green environment and educational opportunities versus long work hours, quiet social lives, and language barriers.

For New Zealand immigrant and Wonders Medicine shop owner, Chi Nan Xie, adapting to life in a new country is about compromising.

"We couldn't really settle down. My wife didn't like living here. Our lifestyle became between China and New Zealand," he says.

Xie says the culture shock and language barrier were huge.

one time we had an argument with our builder. He messed up my window and broke in the wall, and threatened my family. We were scared about it and wanted to call the police but with 111 they can't understand Mandarin."

In a five-year study of more than 140 Asian immigrants, Massey University sociologist Professor Paul Spoonley learned that while New Zealand's natural beauty and peaceful society matched their expectations, there are trade-offs of hard work, long hours and quiet social lives.

"There's a big gap between what immigrants expect and what they find when they get here," he says.

"Many of them felt very lonely, they didn't feel particularly welcomed, although they acknowledged that New Zealanders are generally very tolerant and welcoming."

Following the deaths of a Korean family of four in Christchurch earlier this year, a group of Koreans is setting up an Asian language helpline for support.

But Spoonley says it should be the government giving more support.

"Canada and Australia - they provide English language instruction as part of the deal. We spend very little in terms of post-arrival resourcing and support for immigrants in this country. It's basically up to the immigrants."

The professor also says getting a job is difficult for Asian immigrants as there can be accent and surname discrimination.

Even those who do find employment risk being exploited by their own at times.

Hollywood Bakery's Chinese owners were taken to court before they provided immigrant employees basic rights of regular formal contracts and benefits.

But overall, the Asian migrant experience is positive with 83% saying they are happy with life in New Zealand.

Xie says more time with his family makes tough times worthwhile.

"Every day since I came to New Zealand, I've spent time with my son. Last night my daughter, she was sick, and I held her for the whole night. I couldn't imagine that would happen in China," Xie says.

뉴질랜드를 찾는 아시안 이민자들이 년간 160,000명에 달하는 현실에서, 그들 대부분은 깨끗하고 자연 친화적인 환경과 교육 기회를 얻은 대신, 장 시간의 노동과 사회 활동 제약, 언어 장벽이라는 문제점들을 떠안은 채 살아가고 있다.

뉴질랜드로 이민 와 Wonders Medicine이라는 상점을 운영하고 있는 중국인 치난시에씨는 TV one 뉴스와 가진 인터뷰에서, “우리는 이곳에 제대로 정착할 수가 없었다. 집사람은 이곳에서 사는 것을 싫어한다. 우리의 생활 방식은 중국식도 아니고, 뉴질랜드식도 아니게 어정쩡하게 되었다.”라며 새로운 나라에서의 생활에 적응하는 것이 무척 힘들었다고 전했다.

그는 또한, 공사를 맡겼던 인부와 다툼이 생겨 그 인부가 벽을 부수고 가족을 위협해 111에 신고하려고 했으나 영어를 할 줄 몰라 신고하지 못했던 경험을 떠올리며 뉴질랜드에서 받게 되는 문화적 충격과 언어 장벽이 매우 크다고도 말하였다.

메시 대학 사회학과 폴 스푼리 교수가 140명 이상의 아시안 이민자들을 대상으로 5년 간에 걸쳐 조사한 연구에 따르면, 뉴질랜드의 아름다운 자연과 평화로운 사회 분위기는 이민자들의 기대에 부합한 반면에, 이민자들은 그에 대한 대가로 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 힘든 노동을 하며 활발하지 못한 사교 생활을 하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

스푼리 교수는, 이민자들이 기대하는 것과 그들이 실제로 이곳 뉴질랜드에 와서 마주하게 되는 삶 사이에 큰 차이가 있다는 사실을 지적하며, 특별히 환대 받는다는 느낌을 받지 못한 채 심한 외로움에 시달리고 있는 대다수의 이민자들을 위해서 정부 차원의 지원 대책이 조속히 요구된다고 경고..

중국인들이나 우리 한국사람이나 겪는 현실이나 어려움은 똑같다고 생각됩니다.

오히려 한국사람이 겪는 어려움이 많으면 많았지 덜하지는 않겠다는 느낌도 들고요.

물론 현실을 어떻게 받아들이냐에 따라 느낌도 달라지겠으나

경제적으로 충분히 받쳐주지 못하거나 언어 장벽을 극복하려고 노력하지 않는 상황에서

현실은 점점더 힘들어 지지 않나 싶습니다.

한마디로...
