Waiuku 모래언덕, 화이트 베이팅(White Baiting) 즐기는 키위들

지난 주말에는 '와이우크 모래언덕'을 다녀왔습니다. 출발할 때는 맑던 날씨가 모래언덕에 도착할 무렵에는 거의 폭우 수준의 비바람으로 변했습니다. 비바람 때문에 풍광을 제대로 감상 할 수는 없었으나 큰 강과 거칠기로 소문난 서쪽 바다가 만나는 강 하구의 풍경은 경이롭기 그지없었습니다.

또한 덤으로, 와이후크 타운에서 강하구로 나가는 길은 푸른 풀밭이 언덕에 언덕을 이루는 아름다운 풍경을 보여주었고, 울창하게 가꿔놓은 소나무 숲을 통과할 때는 차 안에 있으면서도 산림욕을 하는 기분이 들 정도였습니다.

아래 글은 와이우크에 대한 소개 글입니다. 와이우크에는 와이카토 강 하구에 있는 검은 모래 비치와 증기기관차 체험이 유명하다고 합니다. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Waiuku

Situated just 20 minutes from the Drury off-ramp of New Zealand's Auckland Southern motorway (S.H.1), visitors may sail a scow, take a ride on a beautifully restored steam train, visit a farm park or heritage sites, take a leisurely stroll through many gardens  (including waterlily gardens), fish in some of the sheltered bays of the Manukau Harbour or take time out to try a spot of trout fishing on one of three local fresh water lakes. You can picnic

 

in the beautiful Waiuku Pine Forest or visit the Kentish Hotel in lower Queen St, which is reputed to be New Zealand's oldest continuously licenced hotel. The Tasman sea, Manukau Harbour and Auckland City can be viewed from the Signal Station or you can take a guided tour through the BHP Steel Mill Plant at Glenbrook.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kariotahi BeachKariotahi Beach is one of those places visitors seem to come across by accident and then fall in love with. only a few kilometres out of Waiuku, Kariotahi is a wide, flat, black-sand beach that is perfect for a host of activities. Handgliding, surf fishing, climbing giant sand hills, watching trotters go through their paces, wind sailing or just walking along the shore.

 

 

 

The Glenbrook Vintage Railway

To reach the G.V.R., take the Drury off-ramp from Auckland's Southern Motorway and follow the main Pukekohe Road for 7 km. Turn right at the Caltex Service Station and follow this main Waiuku Road for a further 13 km, before turning left into Glenbrook Station Road (signposted).

 

The Glenbrook Vintage Railway is a heritage railway, operating steam locomotive hauled vintage passenger trains on nostalgic 12 km return trips through beautiful rural countryside, near Waiuku.
The Railway operates on Sundays and most Public holidays, from Labour Weekend (late October) to Queens Birthday Weekend (early June) inclusive. Trains run hourly from Glenbrook Station, 11am to 4pm. The return trip takes approximately 45 minutes, including a stop at the Workshops, to view restoration work in progress.
The Glenbrook Station complex includes a large free parking area, refreshment rooms, souvenir shop, toilets (incl. wheelchair access), picnic area and childrens play area, motor jigger and hand jigger rides. Also adjacent to the station, is the Glenbrook Farm Park (small entry charge).

 

 

 

가는 길

north shore -> city -> drury까지 1번 모토웨이로 쭉 내려옴 -> drury exit -> Karaka Rd(22번)

-> Waiuku 타운 -> queen st -> waiuku Otaua Rd를 타고 -> Otaua 작은  타운 -> Otaua Rd

-> Hoods Landing Rd -> Forestry Rd  -> Willson Rd -> 여기까지 오면 조림지역 대문을 통과해야 함

조림지역 대문은 오전 7시부터 오후 6시까지만 open(시간을 어기면 대문이 잠겨서 안에 머물러야 함)

(계절에 따라서 조림지역 대문이 열리고 닫히는 시간이 변경된다고 함)

집에서 출발할 때 예상했던 시간보다 많이 걸려서 목적지에 도착했습니다. 처음 가보는 곳이어서 중간에 여러 번 멈춰서 지도를 확인해야 했습니다. 때로는 반대쪽으로 한참 달리다가 차를 돌리기도 했습니다. ^^;;; 미로 속에 빠져서 헤매다가 차츰차츰 문제를 풀어가는 그런 심정이었습니다. 

아찔한 즐거움.. ㅡㅡ;;

와이우크 타운에서 비치까지 가는 길은 전무 목장입니다. 겨울비를 흠뻑 먹은 풀들이 어찌나 푸르고 윤기가 흐르던지... 끝없이 이어지는 푸른 언덕들을 보면서 감탄이 절로 나왔습니다. 목장지역을 지나 조림지역으로 들어서니 비포장 길입니다. '우리 블루버드'가 언제나 고생이 많습니다. ㅡㅡ;;

조림지역은 일종의 사유지여서 출입제한 시간이 있고, 조림지역 안에 들어가서는 불을 피울 수 없습니다. 어기면 벌금이... 곧게 자란 소나무들이 줄지어 있는 모습은 역시 감탄사가 나오기에 충분합니다. 중간중간 세워져 있는 차를 보면 사람들이 산책로를 따라서 산림욕을 하러 들어간 듯 보입니다. 가도 가도 끝이 없게 소나무들이 심어져 있습니다.

처음 와보는 길이여서 목적지가 정확하지 않습니다. 무조건 '모래언덕'입니다. 길 끝까지 가니 강과 맞닿아 있는 주차장입니다. 차들이 몇 대 있고 키위들도 여럿 보입니다. 특이한 점이라면 잠자리 채처럼 생기긴 했는데 사람 두엇이 충분히 들어갈큼 큰 뜰채를 가지고 강으로 향하는 모습입니다. 뭔가 잡으려고 하는가 봅니다.

와이카토 강이 바다와 만나는 곳입니다. 마침 물때가 로우여서 강 1/10 정도까지 사람이 들어가도 허리정도 잠겨 보입니다. 뜰채를 옆으로 끌면서 쭉 걸어가는데 뭘 잡고 있는지 궁금합니다. 물에 들어가지 않고 구경하고 있는 키위에게 물어보니 무슨 물고기를 잡는다고 하는데 쉽게 알아들을 수가 없습니다. (답은 저 위에 보이는 white baiting라는 것입니다.)

비가 내리기 시작해서 차에 올랐습니다. 기대했던 모래언덕이 아닌 것 같아서 다시 차를 돌려서 나옵니다. 맨 오른쪽 동그라미가 차가 갈 수 있는 길 끝지점 주차장입니다. 강과 바로 맞닿아 있습니다. 가운데 동그라미 지점도 주차장입니다. 역시 강과 맞다아 있으나 '모래언덕'은 아닙니다.

제일 큰 동그라미 지역에 주차를 하고 바닷가 쪽으로 1분 정도 걸어가면 순간 낭떠러지 같은 풍경이 나타납니다. 거기가 모래언덕입니다. 거의 75도 정도 각도로 모래언덕을 미끄러져 내려가면 해변으로 내려갈 수 있습니다.

 

해변으로 내려왔다가 다시 올라가려면 저렇게 기어서 올라가야 합니다. 기어서 올라가기도 힘들더군요. ㅜㅜ 모래언덕 위에서 보이는 풍경은 과히 장관입니다. 큰 강과 거친 바다가 하나로 합쳐지는 모습은 말로 설명하기 어렵습니다.

[화이트 베이트]

화이트 베이트는 뉴질랜드에 사는 작은 송어류(이낭아-Inanga)인데 알에서 부화해서 아주 작은 치어상태로 바다로 나갔다가 성냥개비 정도로 자라게 되면 태어났던 강으로 돌아옵니다. 이것을 사람들이 그물로 걷어 올리는 것이죠. 화이트 베이트는 뉴질랜드에서 1킬로그램당 100달러 가까이하는 비싼 고기입니다.(도미가 1킬로그램에 $15 내외) 직접 먹어보지는 못했지만 무념무취한 맛이라고 합니다.

What are whitebait?

The word whitebait does not refer to a single species. It is a general term used in many countries to describe small freshwater fish that are tender and edible. In New Zealand it describes the juvenile forms (around 4–5 centimetres long) of five species of the fish family Galaxiidae.

In spring, whitebait make their way upstream from the sea, swimming near the river’s edge. Large shoals are referred to as runs. Big runs often follow floods, a few days after the water clears – usually in the daytime on a rising tide.

Whitebait can be caught from many New Zealand rivers. Whitebaiters set nets and sit on the river bank, hoping to harvest this popular delicacy.
